Year 3

Happy New Year!

The Year 3 team hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas break and look forward to welcoming the children back to get the next year started.

Things to note:

· Every Monday, the children will continue to receive their spellings to learn and these words will be tested in class every Friday. Please take the time to look through these spellings with your child and complete the activities throughout the week.

· We encourage daily reading and appreciate this being evidenced in their reading record to support them in class. Reading frequently helps your child to make progress and therefore we encourage your child to be read at home a minimum of three times per week.

· Times Table Challenge: Each week for Terms 3 and 4 we will be completing the St Peter’s times table challenge with the aim to improve recall of times table facts. Please encourage your child to learn their tables, starting with 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

· PE days for Terms 3 & 4: Tuesday and Thursdays

Any questions or queries, please do continue to ask your child’s class teacher – we are at the classroom door at the end of every day and are always happy to talk to you.

Year 3 Team

3L – Mrs Lance, Miss Proctor (TA) and Miss Couldridge (TA)

3B – Mrs Bruna, Miss Relf (TA) and Mrs Mulligan (TA)

3J – Mrs Jones and Mrs Dooley (TA)

During the next two terms, both of our topics will be history focussed - Stone Age to Iron Age (Term 3) and Meet the Greeks (Term 4).

Term 3 – Stone Age to Iron Age

In ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’, we will be learning about chronology and placing events in time order. We will explore how people lived throughout these periods, including working, living conditions and family life. Additionally, we will research prehistoric settlements around the UK.

In Maths, we will be learning about multiplication and division. The children will explore how these two concepts are linked and how to use efficient strategies to solve multiplication and division word problems using bar models.

In English, we will have a focus text, ‘Stone Age Boy’, which links to our Stone Age to Iron Age topic. This is a fantastic story in which the children will be engaged in different activities including: instructional writing, non-chronological reports and creative writing. In guided reading, we will be enjoying several texts based around the Stone Age and rocks to link with our topics, where we will explore vocabulary and improve on our retrieval and inference skills.

Term 4 – Meet the Greeks

In Term 4, we will focus our study on Ancient Greece. The children will be interpreting historical evidence and artefacts to understand what life was like for the Greeks. We will study how the Ancient Greeks lived, how they became so successful and how they have influenced our lives today. We will continue to focus on chronology and understanding historical terminology.

In Maths, we will be focussing on length, perimeter and telling the time. We will be learning how to measure and compare length, add and subtract lengths and calculate perimeter. The children will explore 12 hour and 24 hour clocks, including analogue and digital. We will use our knowledge to solve time problems.

In English, our focus text will be ‘Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf’, which is a graphic novel text. We will begin by exploring the text type and introducing the story, including looking at vocabulary and characters. Through art, poetry and drama the children will understand the narrative and create story maps to retell the story in their own words. In guided reading, we will be enjoying the whole class text Krindlekrax, where we will explore vocabulary and improve on our retrieval and inference skills.
